My Word of the Year

Listen this story

2022 is about to end soon, like every year before, or maybe just ended as you read this! Merry Christmas, followed by New Year’s celebrations on December 31 and finally welcome to the New Year. It is an end-of-year ritual for the entire world, regardless of religion, culture, demography, the rich or the poor.

Every year, the World’s dictionary majors list out few words to choose the “Word of the Year.” It is to represent the language trend, the events of the years, people’s usage, etc… But finally selected based on extensive research and analysis of data on the use of words.

Oxford defines the goblin mode as “a type of behavior which is unapologetically self-indulgent, lazy, slovenly, or greedy, typically in a way that rejects social norms or expectations.”

Use of your selfies generated by Artificial intelligence instead of your mobile phone camera can be an example of your goblin mode. The word “selfie” was selected in 2013 as “Word of the Year”. You can imagine how important the word is today that we all use daily. Watch from home instead of work from home may be an interesting example. Employees are no longer happy to come daily to the office for work. Are they in goblin mode?

Words are important because they are the building blocks of any language and allow people to convey their thoughts, ideas, and feelings and essential to communicate.

I have only watched one game of the FIFA World Cup 2022 and that is the final match between Argentina and France. Overwhelmed, satisfied, upset and an incredible experience, the pleasure of this game made me feel that I watched all the matches of the tournament. We are all excited, enthusiastic and feel better by reading stories, watching movies, watching games, though unrelated to us, is an example of vicarious pleasure.

Do you know? “Workaholic” is the Word of the year in 1980 and “VAX”in 2021.

Words are important because they are the building blocks of any language and allow people to convey their thoughts, ideas, and feelings and essential to communicate. In addition to their role in communication, the words we use can influence how we think and feel about the things we are talking about and, we use to inspire, or motivate others.

Collin’s dictionary has also selected the Word of the year is “quiet quitting.” The practice of doing no more work than contractually obliged to do called “quiet quitting.” On similar lines Merriam-Webster goes with ‘gaslight’ as Word of the Year. The word originally defined as psychological manipulation of a person usually for an extended period that creates confusion, loss of confidence and self-esteem and increases the dependency on the perpetrator. In simple words, it can be an act or practice of grossly misleading someone over a period for personal gain. Fake news, biased, misleading narratives are today’s gaslight.

Have you decided on your “Word of the Year?”

Thank you, have a good year
